Historical op houseOpportunity House has been serving Monroe County since 1968. The store, affectionately know as “Op House,” sells merchandise donated by community members. It can still be found at its original location in central Bloomington. The store has been an essential part of the community for almost 50 years by making items available at affordable prices and reducing waste by finding new homes for usable items. It offers so much more than clothing, with a unique selection of hand-sorted antiques, household goods, jewelry, and records.

Proceeds from Opportunity House benefit Monroe County United Ministries (MCUM). MCUM’s nationally-accredited programs provide income-based, full-time childcare for Bloomington preschool children, a summer camp for children ages 6-12, and assistance for Monroe County residents with financial need.

Numerous studies have shown that high-quality early childhood education can have a long-lasting impact on the child, the family, and the broader community. Research indicates that quality early childhood education is one of the best investments a community can make. MCUM also offers coaching and resource assistance to families and individuals of the Monroe County community who are experiencing hardship. These programs serves to ensure that financial need does not leave families hungry, cold, or faced with utility shut-off or eviction.

Whether a need is short or long term, MCUM helps its clients form a tailored plan of action. MCUM’s Self-Sufficiency Center allows client to “shop” for free with a voucher for the necessary emergency items. Additionally, Opportunity House is the largest financial supporter of MCUM’s programs. Click here for more information about the relationship between Op House and MCUM.
